SmartLinks
is a directory of search engines, databases and
archives organized into convenient categories and subcategorizes. Traditional search engines have indexed
millions of pages on the web which is not always what you need.
SmartLinks takes that information, and pares it down to the most
critical and useful information in a clear, easy-to-use format.
The QuickLinks portion of SmartLinks
organizes
selected favorite links most regularly used in one section. The
category title is hyperlinked to the respective page for more choices.
Links on each subject page are generally in alphabetical order within
each category and favorite web sites are identified with a heart. (
= Favorites)
SmartLinks is organized to present the best resources on the web for
the busy person.
Free accounts are available at
both Yahoo (My Yahoo)
and
Google (igoogle)
which
are customizable web pages with news, stock quotes, weather, and many
other features. My Yahoo
and
igoogle links are
easily accessible at the QuickLinks News:
section of the SmartLinks.org home page.
Google, Yahoo and Bing search
boxes are conveniently located at the top of SmartLinks.org. SmartLinks
gives you the most common and best sites regularly used plus
identifying the innovative
sites. Find
it fast with SmartLinks! Then
use the search engines to expand your search.
This
site grew from Elmer Bergman's volunteer teaching of computer classes
at the Redwood City Veterans Memorial Senior Center, especially a
course he called "Friday FAQ's". It also incorporates his knowledge
from being a Certified Public Accountant with a law degree (Juris
Doctorate) and his life experiences and learning including substantial
travel.
SmartLinks is meant to be family friendly
so if you find objectionable content on any external link,

- Click the Tool

in the text box.

Online AOL
- Go to the Internet icon and click on it. You
will be jumped to the Internet connection area.
- Click on the
box, Go to the Web.
- In the Members
menu, click on My AOL.
- Click on the
icon next to Preferences Guide.
- Click on The Web.
- Click on Set Up Now.
- Select the Navigation index card tab.
- In the address box, type in http://www.smartlinks.org
- Click on
OK
and save
your changes
Opera
- Browse normally
to the web page you want as your home page. http://www.smartlinks.org
- Pull down the Tools menu.
- Select Preferences...
- The Preferences dialog box appears.
Click on the General tab.
- Note the Home page field and the Use Current button to the right of
it.
- Click Use Current.
- Click OK.
Special Opera note:
By default,
Opera doesn't load your home page when you start it up. Opera comes to
the same pages you were looking at when you last shut down your
computer.
Google Chrome
- Click
the Tools menu in the browser. (The Chrome "wrench"
icon, located in the upper right hand corner of your browser window.)
- Select
Options.
- In
the Home page section, select the 'Open this page' option.
- Enter
http://www.smartlinks.org
in the text box next to this option.
- Click the Close
button.
